How this maneuver goes - Airplane Flying Handbook- Determine the runway, pattern direction/altitude; monitor CTAF; report ~10 miles out.
- Enter downwind on a 45° angle at pattern altitude, aimed abeam the runway midpoint.
- Fly downwind parallel to the runway ~½–1 mile out; complete before-landing checks and extend gear.
- Abeam the approach end, reduce power and begin the descent; ~45° past the runway end, turn base.
- On base, descend on a track perpendicular to the centerline, correcting for drift; check final before turning.
- Turn final and fly a stabilized descent to the touchdown point.
- Go around any time the approach is unsafe or the runway isn't clearly yours.
