Definition
An authorization by Air Traffic Control (ATC) requiring a pilot to provide only the information needed for the purpose of issuing an IFR clearance, rather than filing a complete IFR flight plan. It is most often used when a pilot already airborne under VFR requests an IFR clearance to continue the flight, or when a quick clearance is needed for a short IFR segment.
Plain English
A short, stripped-down version of an IFR flight plan. Instead of filing every detail, the pilot gives ATC just enough information for them to issue an IFR clearance on the spot.
Context Anchor
Used when a pilot is already in contact with ATC and needs an IFR clearance or IFR handling without filing a full flight plan in the usual way.
Derivation
‘Abbreviated’ comes from the Latin brevis, meaning ‘short.’ Here it signals that the flight plan is a shortened form — only the essentials needed for ATC to issue a clearance.
Why Pilots Care
It allows faster clearance processing for short IFR segments without sacrificing safety or controller awareness.
Intuition Check
Abbreviated does not mean incomplete in a careless way. It means intentionally shortened because ATC only needs certain information for that situation.
Example Sentence 1
When the cloud layer dropped unexpectedly, the pilot contacted Center and requested an abbreviated IFR flight plan to continue safely to the destination.
Example Sentence 2
Because the airplane was already in the air and in radar contact, the controller approved an abbreviated IFR flight plan instead of requiring the full version.
