Definition
Any facility used in, available for use in, or designed for use in aiding air navigation. This includes landing areas, lights, signaling devices, radio direction-finding equipment, radio or other electronic communication, and any other structure or mechanism used to guide or control flight in the air or the landing and takeoff of aircraft.
Plain English
Any piece of equipment, structure, or location that helps pilots navigate, communicate, or land safely. It covers things on the ground that support flying, from runway lights to radio beacons.
Context Anchor
You may see this term in FAA rules, airport information, notices, and discussions of the equipment or services that support flight operations.
Derivation
Air means relating to flight. Navigation comes from older words connected with guiding a ship or vehicle along a route. Facility comes from a word meaning something that makes an action easier. Together, the term points to things that make air travel guidance and communication possible.
Why Pilots Care
These facilities are the backbone of safe navigation; loss or malfunction can force route changes, delay departures, or require alternate airports.
Intuition Check
Do not read facility as only a building. In this FAA use, an air navigation facility can be equipment, a light, a signal system, a landing area, or another aid that supports aircraft operations.
Example Sentence 1
The NOTAM reported that an air navigation facility serving the airport was out of service until further notice.
Example Sentence 2
During flight planning the crew verified that all air navigation facilities along the route were serviceable and within range.
