Definition
An FAA publication that specifies the knowledge, risk management, and flight proficiency standards an applicant must meet to qualify for a particular pilot certificate or rating. It defines the tasks examined on the practical test (checkride) and the performance standards used to evaluate the applicant.

Derivation
"Airman" is the FAA's longstanding term for any certificated aviator. "Certification Standards" simply means the standards for getting certificated. The ACS replaced the older Practical Test Standards (PTS) and added knowledge and risk management elements to each task, not just flight skill tolerances.
