Definition
A military airfield operated by a unit of the Air National Guard, the air component of the United States National Guard. An ANGB hosts Air National Guard flying squadrons and support facilities, and may be co-located with a civilian airport or with another military installation.
Plain English
An airfield used by an Air National Guard unit. It is a military base, often sharing a runway with a regular airport.
Context Anchor
Pilots may see ANGB in airport listings, flight planning information, charts, or notices about airports and military facilities.
Derivation
The National Guard is a state-based military force that can be called into federal service. The 'Air' part refers to its flying units, which fly the same aircraft types as the active-duty Air Force. 'Base' simply means the home airfield where the unit is stationed.
Why Pilots Care
Pilots must identify ANGB locations to understand restricted airspace, joint-use procedures, and military traffic patterns during flight planning.
Intuition Check
Do not assume an ANGB is a public airport just because aircraft operate there. It is a military facility, even when it is next to or part of a civilian airport.
Example Sentence 1
The pilot reviewed NOTAMs for the ANGB before landing, since fighter operations were active that afternoon.
Example Sentence 2
A NOTAM from the ANGB closed one runway for maintenance.
