Brake mean effective pressure is the average pressure that would have to act on a piston during the power stroke to produce the actual usable (brake) horsepower measured at the engine's output shaft. It is calculated from measured brake horsepower, engine displacement, and RPM, and is used as a practical indicator of how effectively a reciprocating engine is converting combustion pressure into useful work.
