Definition
A NOTAM contraction used to indicate that a condition, restriction, or area of effect extends past a specified point, fix, time, or boundary.
Plain English
A short way of writing 'beyond' in NOTAMs, meaning 'past this point' or 'after this point.'
Context Anchor
Seen in NOTAMs and other shortened aviation notices where space is limited.
Derivation
Beyond comes from Old English words meaning “on the farther side.” That idea still fits the aviation use: the condition or instruction applies on the far side of the point being named.
Why Pilots Care
When reading a NOTAM, knowing exactly where a restriction starts and ends is operationally critical. 'BYD' tells you the condition applies past the named reference, not before it.
Intuition Check
BYD does not mean “near” or “up to.” It means past the stated point, distance, time, or limit.
Example Sentence 1
The NOTAM stated that the airway was closed BYD the SLT VOR, so we planned the route to terminate before that point.
Example Sentence 2
Conditions were reported VFR BYD 10 miles from the airport.
