Definition
A method of training in which lessons, demonstrations, practice exercises, and tests are delivered through software on a computer or tablet rather than by an instructor in a classroom. CBI typically allows the student to progress at their own pace, repeat sections as needed, and receive immediate feedback on their answers.
Plain English
Learning a subject through a computer program instead of from a person teaching in a classroom.
Context Anchor
Pilots may see CBI listed in training records, school syllabuses, online ground school programs, and FAA acronym lists.
Why Pilots Care
Lets student pilots complete ground school and knowledge requirements on their own schedule without needing to attend fixed classes.
Intuition Check
CBI does not mean the aircraft is being controlled by a computer. Here it means the instruction is delivered through a computer.
Example Sentence 1
She completed her private pilot ground school using a CBI course on her tablet before meeting with her instructor for the checkride prep.
Example Sentence 2
Flight schools often assign CBI modules for weather theory so pilots can review at home.
