Definition
A liquid finish used on fabric-covered aircraft, made by dissolving cellulose nitrate in solvents along with plasticizers and thinners. When brushed or sprayed onto aircraft fabric, the solvents evaporate and leave a tough, glossy film that shrinks the fabric tight over the airframe and seals it against air and moisture. Cellulose nitrate dope is highly flammable both wet and dry, and is no longer the preferred dope for most modern fabric work because it is less weather-resistant than cellulose acetate butyrate.

Derivation
‘Cellulose’ comes from the Latin ‘cellula’ (small cell), referring to the plant-fibre material it is made from. ‘Nitrate’ means cellulose treated with nitric acid, which makes it dissolvable and film-forming — and also flammable. ‘Dope’ in the aviation sense comes from an old Dutch word ‘doop’ meaning a thick liquid or sauce; in early aviation it stuck as the name for any liquid you painted onto fabric to tighten and seal it.
