Definition
The specific volume of airspace, both lateral and vertical, for which an Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) has air traffic control responsibility. Each Center's area is subdivided into smaller sectors, each worked by an individual controller.
Plain English
The chunk of sky that one en route control facility is in charge of. Aircraft flying through that chunk talk to controllers at that Center.
Context Anchor
You may see this term in air traffic control descriptions, especially when discussing which center is responsible for an aircraft during the en route portion of a flight.
Derivation
"Center" here is short for Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC), the FAA facility that handles en route traffic between terminal areas. "Area" simply means the assigned block of airspace. The phrase is FAA shorthand: the airspace belonging to a Center.
Why Pilots Care
Knowing which Center's area you are in determines the correct frequency to contact, the controller responsible for your route, and the services available.
Intuition Check
Do not read “Center's Area” as the middle part of an airport or route. It means the airspace assigned to a particular regional air traffic control center.
Example Sentence 1
After departing Denver and climbing to cruise, the flight entered Denver Center's area and checked in on the assigned frequency.
Example Sentence 2
The en route chart shows the boundary between Cleveland Center's area and Boston Center's area along this airway.
