Definition
The portion of the sky covered by clouds at a given level, expressed in eighths (oktas) or in standard sky-cover categories such as few, scattered, broken, or overcast. Cloud amount is reported for each cloud layer observed and forms part of standard weather observations and forecasts.
Plain English
How much of the sky is covered by clouds. It tells you whether the sky is mostly clear, partly covered, or completely covered.
Context Anchor
Seen in aviation weather reports, forecasts, and preflight weather briefings.
Why Pilots Care
It decides whether visual flight rules remain usable and directly affects route choices and safety margins.
Grounding Statement
Imagine standing on the ramp and looking at the whole sky above you; cloud amount is the part of that sky that has cloud covering it.
Intuition Check
Cloud amount does not mean cloud height, cloud thickness, or how dark the clouds look. It means sky coverage: how much of the visible sky is covered by cloud.
Example Sentence 1
The METAR reported a cloud amount of broken at 2,500 feet, so the pilot planned an IFR departure.
Example Sentence 2
With cloud amount reported as OVC, the pilot lost visual reference to the ground.
