Definition
In a multiple choice test item, the correct answer is the single response option that fully and accurately answers the question or completes the stem. It is the option the test writer has designated as right, and all other options (the distractors) are deliberately wrong or incomplete.
Plain English
The right choice among the options. It's the one answer that actually matches what the question is asking, while the others are written to look possible but be wrong.
Context Anchor
Seen when instructors build or review multiple-choice questions in aviation training materials, stage checks, or written tests.
Derivation
Correct comes from a Latin word meaning “to make straight” or “set right.” Answer comes from an Old English word meaning “a reply.” Together, correct answer means the reply that is set right against the question.
Why Pilots Care
For instructors writing tests, the correct answer must be clearly and unambiguously right. If two options could be defended as correct, the question is flawed and the test no longer measures what the student actually knows.
Intuition Check
Do not assume the correct answer is the longest, most familiar, or most technical-sounding option. It is the option that actually answers the question as written.
Example Sentence 1
When writing the quiz, the instructor made sure the correct answer was clearly supported by the textbook and that the distractors were plausible but wrong.
Example Sentence 2
In the sample multiple choice item, option B was identified as the correct answer.
