Definition
A fast-curing synthetic adhesive that bonds almost instantly when pressed thinly between two surfaces in the presence of trace moisture. Commonly known as super glue, it forms a strong, rigid bond on close-fitting parts and is used in aircraft maintenance for small repairs such as bonding plastics, fabric patches, and minor trim or interior components.
Plain English
Super glue. A clear liquid glue that sticks things together very quickly when the surfaces are pressed together.
Context Anchor
Seen in aircraft maintenance, repair materials, shop procedures, and discussions of bonding small parts or materials.
Derivation
From cyano- (the chemical group containing carbon and nitrogen) and acrylate (a family of fast-setting plastics). The name describes the chemistry of the glue: an acrylate-based resin that sets when exposed to the tiny amount of moisture on most surfaces, including skin.
Why Pilots Care
Provides rapid, clamp-free repairs on non-critical components during field maintenance or preflight fixes.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “instant” means “approved” or “strong enough for any aircraft repair.” It only means the adhesive sets quickly.
Example Sentence 1
He used a drop of cyanoacrylate adhesive to reattach the loose plastic trim above the instrument panel.
Example Sentence 2
Before the flight, the owner used cyanoacrylate adhesive to secure a cracked plastic lens on the wingtip light.
