Definition
A traffic management tool used by air traffic control that calculates and displays the remaining ground delay assigned to a departing aircraft under a traffic management program, such as a Ground Delay Program. It counts down the time until the aircraft is released to depart, helping controllers and traffic managers sequence departures into a constrained airspace or destination airport.
Plain English
A timer that shows how much longer a flight has to wait on the ground before it is allowed to take off, when ATC has held it back to manage traffic flow.
Context Anchor
Seen in air traffic control and traffic-flow situations when a flight is being held for a required departure time.
Why Pilots Care
Helps pilots anticipate clearance times, manage fuel burn, and decide whether to request an alternate routing.
Intuition Check
DCT does not mean “direct” in this entry. Here, DCT means a timer that counts down a delay before a flight may depart.
Example Sentence 1
Ground control advised the crew that the Delay Countdown Timer showed twelve minutes remaining before their release time.
Example Sentence 2
We adjusted our taxi speed after checking the current DCT value on the flight plan.
