Definition
A measurement used by Instrument Landing System (ILS) receivers to determine an aircraft's position relative to the localizer centerline or glide slope path. The ILS transmits two overlapping radio signals modulated at different audio frequencies (90 Hz and 150 Hz). DDM is the difference between the strengths (modulation depths) of these two signals at the aircraft's position. When the aircraft is exactly on course, both signals are equal and DDM is zero. As the aircraft drifts off course, one signal becomes stronger than the other, producing a non-zero DDM that drives the course deviation needle.
Plain English
A way the ILS measures how far off the approach path you are by comparing the strengths of two radio tones. Equal tones means you're on the centerline; one tone louder than the other means you've drifted to one side, and the cockpit needle moves accordingly.
Context Anchor
Seen in instrument landing system accuracy, localizer, and glide path discussions, especially in technical descriptions of how the guidance signal is formed and checked.
Derivation
Difference means one value compared with another. Modulation means changing a radio signal to carry information. Depth of modulation means how much the signal is being changed. Together, difference in depth of modulation means comparing how much two parts of the radio signal are being changed.
Why Pilots Care
DDM value determines the exact needle position on the course deviation indicator, allowing precise tracking during an ILS approach.
Analogy
Think of two people tugging gently on opposite sides of a rope. If both pull equally, the rope stays centered. If one pulls more, the rope moves that way. DDM is like measuring the imbalance between the two pulls.
Intuition Check
Depth does not mean physical depth in the ground or distance below something here. It means how much a radio signal is being varied to carry guidance information.
Example Sentence 1
When the aircraft is centered on the localizer, the DDM is zero and the course deviation needle sits in the middle of the indicator.
Example Sentence 2
A DDM of zero means the aircraft is centered on the glideslope.
