Definition
In avionics and computer-based systems, the underlying logical organization of data or instructions, as distinct from the surface form in which it is presented to the user. Deep structure refers to the internal arrangement that the system actually processes, while the visible display, syntax, or interface is the surface structure built on top of it.

Why Pilots Care
Pilots and instructors need to check meaning, not just words. A student may repeat the right phrase but still have the wrong idea underneath, and that can lead to unsafe decisions or incorrect aircraft handling.
Analogy
Think of a restaurant menu. The menu shows you 'Grilled Chicken Sandwich' (surface structure). The kitchen's recipe card, inventory codes, and prep instructions behind the scenes are the deep structure. You eat from the menu; the kitchen runs on the recipe.
Grounding Statement
If a pilot says one thing but means something slightly different, deep structure is the meaning that must be understood.
Intuition Check
Deep structure does not mean a physical structure that is deep underground or deep inside an aircraft. Here, it means the underlying meaning behind communication.
