Definition
A symbol or term used in mathematics, engineering, and aviation to represent a change or difference in a quantity. The Greek capital letter delta (Δ) is placed before a variable to indicate the amount that variable has changed. In aviation, delta commonly appears in performance and weather calculations, such as ΔP (change in pressure), ΔT (change in temperature), or ΔV (change in velocity).

Derivation

Why Pilots Care
Performance calculations often hinge on a change rather than an absolute value — how much the temperature differs from standard, how much pressure has dropped, how much airspeed has built. Recognising delta as 'the change in' keeps these formulas readable instead of intimidating.
Intuition Check
Delta does not automatically mean Delta Air Lines, a river delta, or a triangular wing shape. In standard aviation radio spelling, Delta means the letter D.
