Definition
An expect-further-clearance (EFC) time is the time, given by ATC, at which a pilot in holding can expect to receive a new clearance to leave the holding fix and continue along the route. It is also the time the pilot will depart the holding fix in the event of two-way radio communications failure.
Plain English
It is the time ATC tells you to expect your next instruction. If your radio fails while you are holding, this is the time you leave the holding fix and continue on your way.
Context Anchor
Seen in instrument holding instructions, especially when air traffic control assigns a hold and expects a delay.
Why Pilots Care
Helps the pilot plan fuel use and decide whether to request an alternate route or divert if the hold extends beyond safe reserves.
Intuition Check
Do not treat an EFC time as permission to leave the hold before being cleared. It is an expected time for the next instruction, not a new clearance by itself.
Example Sentence 1
ATC instructed the pilot to hold east of the VOR and gave an EFC time of 1545.
Example Sentence 2
With the EFC approaching, the pilot prepared to request further clearance or an alternate clearance.
