Definition
The waypoint on an RNAV or GPS instrument approach that marks the beginning of the final approach segment. From this point, the aircraft is established inbound on the final approach course toward the runway or missed approach point, and the approach navigation system transitions into its final approach mode.
Plain English
It is the point on a GPS approach where the final, straight-in part of the approach to the runway begins. Once you cross it, you are on final.
Context Anchor
Seen on instrument approach charts and in aircraft navigation systems during approaches that use waypoints.
Derivation
Final means last. Approach is the segment of flight leading to landing. Waypoint is a defined geographic point used in area navigation, identified by latitude and longitude rather than by a ground-based navigation aid. Together: the waypoint that starts the last leg of the approach.
Why Pilots Care
It signals the moment the pilot must be fully configured, on speed, and ready for landing; crossing the FAWP without proper setup can result in an unstable approach.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “final” means the airplane is already at the runway. The FAWP is a waypoint before the runway that begins the final part of the approach.
Example Sentence 1
Approaching the FAWP, the pilot completed the landing checklist and began the final descent.
Example Sentence 2
Once cleared for the approach, the pilot selected the FAWP as the active waypoint in the GPS.
