Definition
That segment of an instrument approach procedure in which alignment and descent for landing are accomplished. The final approach segment begins at the final approach fix or point and ends at the missed approach point.
Plain English
It is the last part of an instrument approach. During this stretch, the aircraft lines up with the runway and descends toward it. It starts at a defined point on the approach chart and ends at the spot where the pilot must either see the runway and land, or go around.
Context Anchor
Seen on instrument approach charts and during approach briefings, especially when identifying where the final descent toward landing begins.
Derivation
‘Final’ comes from the Latin finalis, meaning ‘last’ or ‘at the end.’ ‘Segment’ comes from Latin segmentum, meaning ‘a piece cut off.’ Together they describe the last cut-off piece of the approach — the closing stretch before landing.
Why Pilots Care
Pilots must be stabilized by this point to safely complete the landing or execute a missed approach.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “final approach segment” means any time a pilot says the airplane is “on final.” In this ICAO instrument-procedure meaning, it is a specific published part of the approach where alignment and descent for landing are accomplished.
Example Sentence 1
Once we crossed the final approach fix, we entered the final approach segment and began our descent toward the runway.
Example Sentence 2
During the final approach segment the pilot maintained the glide path to stay on course for landing.
