Definition
Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) is the body of teaching theory and technique that an applicant must master to become an FAA-certificated flight or ground instructor. It is tested by a dedicated FAA knowledge test (the FOI test) covering subjects such as the learning process, human behavior, effective communication, the teaching process, assessment, instructor responsibilities, planning instructional activity, and risk management. A passing FOI test result is a prerequisite for the Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Ground Instructor knowledge tests, unless the applicant already holds a teaching credential that qualifies for an exemption.
Plain English
FOI is the part of instructor training that teaches you how to teach. Before you can be tested as a flight or ground instructor, you have to pass a separate written test on how people learn, how to communicate clearly, how to plan a lesson, and how to evaluate a student.
Context Anchor
Seen in flight instructor training, especially when reviewing required FAA knowledge tests, certificates, ratings, and endorsements.
Derivation
"Fundamentals" comes from the Latin fundamentum, meaning foundation or base. The name signals that this material is the foundation an instructor stands on before adding aviation-specific teaching skills.
Why Pilots Care
Passing the FOI is a legal prerequisite for obtaining a flight instructor certificate; without it an applicant cannot proceed to the practical test or begin instructing.
Intuition Check
FOI does not mean a flying-skills test. In this context, it means the teaching knowledge a future flight instructor must understand.
Example Sentence 1
She passed the FOI knowledge test last week and is now scheduled to take the CFI Airplane test next month.
Example Sentence 2
The FOI exam confirms that the future instructor understands how students acquire and retain piloting skills.
