Definition
The third phase of the demonstration-performance training method, in which the learner carries out the skill or procedure while the instructor watches closely, ready to correct errors, prompt next steps, or intervene if safety or accuracy is at risk. The learner does the work; the instructor monitors and guides without taking over.
Plain English
The student does the task while the instructor watches and helps as needed. The student is in control, but the instructor is right there to step in.
Context Anchor
Seen in the demonstration-performance training method used by aviation instructors when teaching a maneuver, procedure, or skill.
Why Pilots Care
Allows the learner to develop hands-on competence safely, with immediate correction before errors become habits or create risk.
Intuition Check
Do not read this as the final test. In this step, the learner is performing, but the instructor is still actively supervising and helping as needed.
Example Sentence 1
During learner performance with instructor supervision, the student flew the traffic pattern while the CFI monitored airspeed and spacing, offering brief corrections on final.
Example Sentence 2
The instructor stayed quiet during learner performance with instructor supervision, allowing the student to correct a slight altitude deviation before offering feedback.
