Definition
A foundational principle of aviation instruction stating that genuine learning occurs only through the learner's own experience. Because learning is an individual process, an instructor cannot transfer knowledge directly into a student's mind; the student must personally engage with the material, perform the task, or work through the problem for real learning to take place. Two students exposed to the same lesson may learn different things, because each filters the experience through their own prior knowledge, perception, and effort.
Plain English
People only truly learn things by doing them or working through them themselves. A teacher can guide and explain, but the student has to actually experience the lesson for it to stick.
