Definition
A principle in aviation instruction stating that learning involves more than just acquiring knowledge or skills — it includes verbal, conceptual, perceptual, motor, problem-solving, and emotional elements, all of which occur together. A student who appears to be learning only the surface task is, in fact, also learning attitudes, habits, judgments, and ways of thinking at the same time.
Plain English
When a student learns something, they're never just learning that one thing. They're also picking up attitudes, habits, ways of solving problems, and emotional reactions — all at once. Good instructors recognize this and pay attention to all of it, not just whether the student got the technical answer right.
Context Anchor
Seen in the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook when discussing how instructors should understand and support student learning.
Derivation
‘Multifaceted’ comes from ‘multi-’ (many) and ‘facet’ (a flat surface on a cut gem). A gemstone has many faces that all show at once when you turn it in the light. The word is used here to say learning has many sides happening at the same time, not one at a time.
Why Pilots Care
Instructors who recognize this principle design lessons that address attitudes, skills, and knowledge together, improving student retention and performance in flight training.
Analogy
Learning to fly is like learning to drive a car in traffic. Knowing the rules matters, but the person also has to move smoothly, watch outside, stay calm, and make good choices at the same time.
Intuition Check
Do not read multifaceted as simply meaning “complicated.” Here it means learning has several different parts that develop together.
Example Sentence 1
Because learning is multifaceted, the CFI watched not only the student's stall recovery technique but also her reaction under stress and her willingness to admit the mistake afterward.
Example Sentence 2
When reviewing stalls, the CFI remembered that learning is multifaceted and included both the mental recognition cues and the physical control inputs.
