Definition
A traffic pattern in which all turns around the airport are made to the left. This is the standard direction of flow at most non-towered airports unless a right-hand pattern is published for a specific runway.
Plain English
A way of flying around the airport before landing where every turn you make is a left turn.
Context Anchor
Seen in airport operations, especially when using wind direction indicators, segmented circles, traffic pattern indicators, airport diagrams, or local airport procedures.
Why Pilots Care
Knowing the required turn direction prevents traffic conflicts and ensures safe, orderly arrivals and departures.
Grounding Statement
Picture the airplane circling the runway in a box shape, making left turns at each corner.
Intuition Check
A left-hand pattern does not mean the runway is on the left at all times. It means the normal turns around the runway are left turns.
Example Sentence 1
Runway 27 uses a standard left-hand pattern, so we’ll turn left onto crosswind after takeoff.
Example Sentence 2
The sectional chart shows a left-hand pattern for runway 18.
