Definition
A category of airline flight crew reserve duty in which the crewmember is given a relatively long notice period — typically several hours — between being called and being required to report for a flight assignment. During long-call reserve, the crewmember is generally free to be away from home but must remain reachable and able to report by the assigned time.
Plain English
A standby status where a pilot or flight attendant is on call for a trip but gets several hours' warning before they have to show up at the airport, giving them time to get ready and travel in.

Derivation
Long-call' simply describes the length of the notice given before the crewmember must report. It is paired with 'short-call reserve,' where the report time is much shorter — often two hours or less.

Intuition Check
Do not read “reserve” as fuel reserve or a spare aircraft. Here it means a pilot who is available to be assigned a trip. “Long-call” does not mean the pilot can ignore the phone; it means the report time must be far enough away, normally at least 10 hours.
