Definition
A theory of human motivation, proposed by psychologist Abraham Maslow, which arranges human needs into five levels: physiological (food, water, rest), safety (security, stability), belonging (love, social connection), esteem (recognition, self-respect), and self-actualization (reaching one's full potential). Maslow argued that lower-level needs generally must be reasonably met before a person becomes strongly motivated by higher-level ones.
Plain English
A model that says people are driven by different needs in a rough order — basic survival first, then safety, then belonging, then feeling respected, and finally personal growth. People struggle to focus on higher goals when basic needs aren’t met.
Context Anchor
Seen in the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook when discussing student motivation, readiness to learn, and how an instructor can recognize barriers that are not strictly about flying skill.
Derivation
Named after Abraham Maslow, the American psychologist who introduced the model in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation. The term hierarchy comes from Greek hierarkhia, meaning a ranked order — useful here because the levels build on each other rather than standing side by side.
Why Pilots Care
Instructors use it to identify why a student pilot may lack motivation or struggle to learn, such as when basic needs like rest or security are unmet.
Analogy
It is like trying to build the upper floors of a house before the foundation is stable. The higher parts may be important, but they do not hold well if the lower support is missing.
Intuition Check
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is not a rigid checklist that every person follows in exactly the same order. It is a practical way to understand that unmet basic needs can block attention, confidence, and learning.
Example Sentence 1
The instructor noticed her student was distracted and hungry, so she paused the briefing for a meal break before continuing — a practical application of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Example Sentence 2
By addressing lower-level needs first, the CFI helped the student reach higher motivation for solo flight.
