Definition
Weather data relevant to aviation operations, including observations, forecasts, and advisories about conditions such as wind, visibility, cloud cover, precipitation, temperature, pressure, and hazardous phenomena. METI is gathered, formatted, and distributed through aviation weather services to support flight planning and in-flight decisions.
Plain English
Weather information that pilots use to plan and fly safely. It covers what the weather is doing now and what it's expected to do, in a form built for aviation.
Context Anchor
Seen in FAA abbreviation lists and shortened aviation messages where weather information is being referenced in a compact form.
Derivation
From the Greek meteoron, meaning 'thing high up' or 'phenomenon in the sky.' Meteorology became the study of atmospheric phenomena, so meteorological information is simply information about what the atmosphere is doing.
Why Pilots Care
Current METI lets pilots evaluate weather hazards and choose safe routes or departure times.
Intuition Check
METI is not a specific weather report by itself. It is a shorthand label meaning weather information.
Example Sentence 1
Before departure, the pilot reviewed all available meteorological information for the route and destination.
Example Sentence 2
Updated METI showed improving visibility along the route.
