Definition
The MITRE Corporation is a U.S. not-for-profit organization that operates federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs). For aviation, MITRE runs the Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD), which provides the FAA with independent technical research, analysis, and engineering support for the National Airspace System, including air traffic control modernization, NextGen, airspace design, and safety analysis.
Plain English
MITRE is an outside research organization the FAA hires to help study, design, and improve the air traffic system. Pilots will see the name in FAA documents that reference research or technical work done on the FAA's behalf.
Context Anchor
Seen in FAA acronym lists, aviation research references, and material discussing air traffic or aviation system development.
Why Pilots Care
Pilots don't interact with MITRE directly, but much of the airspace design, procedure development, and ATC system work that affects daily flying is shaped by MITRE's research. Recognizing the name helps a pilot understand the source when it appears in FAA documents.
Intuition Check
MITRE is not a cockpit instrument, clearance, or flight procedure. In this context, it is the name of an organization.
Example Sentence 1
The advisory circular cited a MITRE study on runway incursion patterns at large hub airports.
Example Sentence 2
MITRE research contributed to tools that reduce delays and improve routing for airline flights.
