Definition
A grouping phrase used in flight instruction to describe aircraft that demand a higher level of pilot knowledge and workload management than a basic trainer. A complex aircraft is one equipped with retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable-pitch propeller (or, for seaplanes, flaps and a controllable-pitch propeller). A high-performance aircraft is one with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. 'Modern' refers to current-generation aircraft that typically include advanced avionics, integrated electronic displays, autopilots, and other automated systems. An aircraft can fall into one, two, or all three of these categories at once.
Plain English
Aircraft that are more capable -- and more demanding to fly -- than a basic trainer. They have features like retractable gear, adjustable propellers, bigger engines, or advanced cockpit electronics, all of which require extra training and attention from the pilot.
Context Anchor
Seen when discussing transition training, instructor planning, aircraft checkouts, and safe operation of more capable aircraft.
Derivation
Modern comes from a Latin word meaning “just now” or “current.” Complex comes from a Latin idea of things being “woven together,” which fits an aircraft with several systems that must be managed together. Performance comes from the idea of carrying something out or accomplishing it; in aviation, high performance means the aircraft can produce more power and capability.
Why Pilots Care
Operating these aircraft without the proper training increases risk and reduces efficiency; the FAA requires specific endorsements to ensure pilots can handle the added systems safely.
Grounding Statement
The key idea is increased pilot workload: the aircraft may do more, but the pilot also has more to manage.
Intuition Check
Do not read these as ordinary everyday adjectives only. “Modern” does not just mean new, “complex” does not just mean difficult, and “high-performance” does not just mean impressive; in aviation, these words point to aircraft features and power levels that change how the aircraft must be operated.
Example Sentence 1
Before endorsing the student for solo in the Bonanza, the instructor logged ground and flight training in the modern, complex, or high-performance aircraft category as required by regulation.
Example Sentence 2
Insurance companies often require extra training hours for pilots transitioning into modern, complex, or high-performance aircraft.
