Definition
In NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) contractions, MUD is the standard shorthand for mud — wet, soft earth — used to report contamination on a runway, taxiway, ramp, or other movement area at an airport.
Plain English
When a NOTAM uses MUD, it means there is mud on part of the airport surface. Pilots are being warned that a runway, taxiway, or ramp is dirty, soft, or slippery because of wet earth.
Context Anchor
Seen in NOTAMs and airport condition reports when a runway, taxiway, or ramp area has mud on it.
Why Pilots Care
Mud reduces braking effectiveness and can make surfaces slippery, directly affecting takeoff and landing safety.
Grounding Statement
If an aircraft wheel rolls through mud, it may not grip or roll as cleanly as it would on a dry, firm surface.
Intuition Check
Do not read MUD as just ordinary dirt nearby. In this aviation context, it means mud is being reported as a surface condition where aircraft operations may be affected.
Example Sentence 1
A NOTAM for the field reported MUD on the south end of Runway 14, so the pilot planned to land long and avoid the contaminated area.
Example Sentence 2
After heavy rain the tower issued a new NOTAM listing MUD on all taxiways until the surface dried.
