Definition
In a standard holding pattern, the non-holding side is the side of the holding course opposite the racetrack-shaped pattern. It is the area the aircraft does not enter during normal holding, lying on the opposite side of the inbound holding course from the turns and outbound leg.
Plain English
The side of the holding course where the aircraft does not fly. The actual holding loop is on the other side.
Context Anchor
Used when drawing or flying holding pattern entries, especially when deciding which side of the holding course the aircraft is on before crossing the holding fix.
Why Pilots Care
Correct identification of the non-holding side prevents entry mistakes and ensures the aircraft stays on the protected side of the pattern.
Grounding Statement
Picture the inbound course as a centerline through the holding fix: the pattern sits on one side, and the non-holding side is the other side.
Intuition Check
Do not read non-holding side as “a side where holding is not allowed.” It simply means the side opposite the racetrack-shaped holding pattern.
Example Sentence 1
Because the fix was approached from the non-holding side, the pilot used a parallel entry before turning back to join the inbound course.
Example Sentence 2
The pilot confirmed the non-holding side lay to the left of the inbound course before starting the right turn outbound.
