Definition
A dedicated set of pages on a Multi-Function Display (MFD) that lists the closest navigation facilities and reference points to the aircraft's current position, including airports, intersections, VORs, NDBs, user waypoints, frequencies, and airspace boundaries. Each page within the group displays one category of nearest items, sorted by proximity and updated continuously as the aircraft moves.
Plain English
A section of the cockpit display that shows you what's closest to you right now -- the nearest airports, navigation aids, frequencies, and airspaces -- and keeps that list updated as you fly.
Context Anchor
Seen on GPS and multifunction displays when using the nearest-airport or nearest-location function, especially during diversions or abnormal situations.
Derivation
NRST is simply a shortened on-screen label for 'nearest.' Avionics manufacturers abbreviate words to fit limited display space. 'Page group' refers to a cluster of related screens you can flip between using the inner knob, while the outer knob moves between groups.
Why Pilots Care
Gives immediate access to suitable diversion airports in an emergency or when weather or fuel concerns arise.
Intuition Check
NRST does not mean the display will choose the best airport for you. It means the pages show nearby options, and the pilot still decides which one is suitable.
Example Sentence 1
When the oil pressure dropped, she turned the outer knob to the NRST page group and selected the closest airport with a paved runway long enough for her aircraft.
Example Sentence 2
While reviewing options on the NRST Page Group, she noted the distance, bearing, and available services at the three closest airports.
