Definition
A defined two-dimensional ground area surrounding runways, taxiways, and taxilanes that must be kept clear of objects, except for those whose location is fixed by function (such as runway lights or navigational aids). Parked aircraft and agricultural operations are not permitted within an OFA when the adjacent runway or taxiway is in use.
Plain English
A protected strip of ground next to a runway or taxiway that has to stay clear of obstacles. Only things that absolutely need to be there, like edge lights, are allowed inside it.
Context Anchor
Seen in airport design, runway and taxiway safety discussions, airport inspections, construction planning, and some airport operations notices.
Why Pilots Care
Keeps aircraft clear of collisions during takeoff, landing, and taxi operations and forms part of required runway safety standards.
Grounding Statement
Picture the OFA as the protected clear space around an aircraft’s ground path, not just the pavement the wheels are on.
Intuition Check
“Object free” does not mean nothing can ever be in the area. It means the area must be clear of unnecessary objects; only required aviation-related objects are allowed.
Example Sentence 1
Ground crews kept the fuel truck outside the OFA until the aircraft on the adjacent taxiway had passed.
Example Sentence 2
Airport vehicles are prohibited from stopping inside the OFA during aircraft operations.
