Definition
A flight deck configuration in which the cockpit is not separated from the rest of the airplane by a closed door or bulkhead, leaving the pilot seats, controls, and instrument panel directly exposed to the cabin or surrounding area.
Plain English
The pilot's seating and controls are out in the open, with no door or wall closing the cockpit off from the rest of the airplane.
Context Anchor
Seen when discussing airplanes that have an open cockpit or partially open pilot area, especially older, experimental, or some light sport aircraft.
Derivation
Flight deck originally referred to the deck of a ship used for flight operations, then came to mean the pilot control area of an aircraft. Open keeps its normal meaning here: not closed off or sealed from the outside air.
Why Pilots Care
Affects cockpit security, passenger monitoring, and how quickly a pilot can respond to cabin issues.
Grounding Statement
In an open flight deck, the pilot is flying the airplane while sitting in a control area that outside air can directly reach.
Intuition Check
Do not read open flight deck as meaning the controls are available for anyone to use. Here, open means physically exposed to outside air, not unrestricted access.
Example Sentence 1
Because the trainer had an open flight deck, the instructor reminded the student to brief passengers about staying clear of the controls.
Example Sentence 2
During the preflight briefing the instructor pointed out that an open flight deck changes how we handle cabin emergencies.
