Definition
An aircraft is operated for hire when it is used to carry persons or property for compensation, or when the pilot is paid to fly it. Aircraft used in this way are subject to stricter inspection and maintenance requirements under 14 CFR Part 91 than aircraft flown only for personal, non-commercial purposes.
Plain English
The aircraft is being used in a way where someone is paying for the flight — either paying for a ride, paying to have something carried, or paying the pilot. When that's the case, the FAA requires more frequent and more thorough inspections.
Context Anchor
Seen during preflight assessment when checking whether the aircraft has the inspections and approvals required for the way it will be used.
Derivation
Operate means to use or put something to work. Hire means payment for the use of something or for a service. Together, operated for hire means the aircraft is being put to work for compensation.
Why Pilots Care
Determines whether additional regulatory requirements apply to the flight, including maintenance intervals and equipment mandates that affect legal operation.
Intuition Check
Do not assume operated for hire means the pilot personally is being paid. The key point is that the aircraft is being used in a paid service or paid instruction situation.
Example Sentence 1
Because the aircraft is operated for hire giving sightseeing flights, it must receive a 100-hour inspection in addition to its annual inspection.
Example Sentence 2
Aircraft operated for hire must follow the more frequent inspection schedule listed in the maintenance records.
