Definition
The combined skill of knowing where the airplane currently is in relation to the ground, landmarks, airspace, and intended route (orientation), and the process of planning and following a path from one place to another using visual references, instruments, charts, or electronic systems (navigation).
Plain English
Knowing where you are right now, and knowing how to get from here to where you want to go.
Context Anchor
Used when learning how to find your position, follow a planned path, use outside references, and avoid becoming unsure of where you are during flight.
Derivation
Orientation comes from the Latin oriens, meaning 'the east' or 'rising sun' — early travelers fixed their position by facing east toward the sunrise. Navigation comes from the Latin navigare, meaning 'to sail a ship.' Together the words capture two halves of the same job: first knowing which way you're pointed in the world, then steering a deliberate course through it.
Why Pilots Care
Loss of orientation quickly leads to disorientation or unintended flight into terrain, while accurate navigation ensures fuel reserves are met and arrival occurs at the planned airport.
Grounding Statement
In flight, orientation is answering “Where am I and which way am I going?” while navigation is using that answer to keep going toward the right place.
Intuition Check
Do not assume orientation only means the direction the nose is pointed. Here it means your overall awareness of where the airplane is and how it is situated in relation to the ground and the planned path. Do not assume navigation only means using GPS. A pilot can navigate with outside landmarks, a chart, instruments, radio aids, GPS, or a combination of these.
Example Sentence 1
Before the cross-country flight, the student practiced orientation and navigation by identifying landmarks on the sectional chart and tracking progress against the planned route.
Example Sentence 2
Under instrument conditions the crew used the attitude indicator, GPS, and VOR radials for continuous orientation and navigation to the destination airport.
