A thunderstorm formed when moist, unstable air is forced upward by sloping terrain such as a mountain or hillside, cooling as it rises until it condenses, builds into a towering cloud, and produces lightning, heavy rain, and turbulence. These storms tend to form on the windward (upwind-facing) side of a mountain range and can remain anchored to the same ridge for hours as the wind keeps lifting fresh moist air into the same spot.
