Definition
Streamlined fairings fitted around the wheels of a fixed-gear aircraft to reduce aerodynamic drag. Also called wheel pants or wheel fairings.
Plain English
Smooth covers placed over the wheels of a small airplane so the air flows around them cleanly instead of bashing into them. They make the airplane a little faster and more efficient.
Context Anchor
Seen during preflight inspection, maintenance, and discussions of fixed landing gear aircraft.
Derivation
Borrowed from the everyday word 'pants' because the fairings wrap around the wheel and lower strut much like trousers wrap around a leg. The shape suggested the name.
Why Pilots Care
Wheel pants improve cruise speed and fuel efficiency while also protecting the wheels from debris.
Intuition Check
Pants does not mean clothing here. In this aviation use, pants are the smooth covers fitted around aircraft wheels.
Example Sentence 1
He removed the wheel pants before flying into the grass strip to keep mud from packing inside them.
Example Sentence 2
During preflight the student checked that both pants were secure and free of cracks.
