Definition
A learning objective written in terms of observable, measurable student performance. It states what the learner must be able to do, the conditions under which they must do it, and the standard of performance that defines success.
Plain English
A clear statement of what a student should be able to do after training, written so that both the instructor and the student can tell whether they have actually done it.
Context Anchor
Seen in flight instructor lesson plans, ground training plans, and evaluations of student progress.
Derivation
Performance here means the act of doing something that can be seen and measured. Objective comes from Latin objectum, meaning a thing presented to the mind — a target. So a performance-based objective is a target defined by what the student does, not by what they know in their head.
Why Pilots Care
It turns vague training intentions into concrete, testable skills that directly support safe flight operations and checkride readiness.
Grounding Statement
It turns a broad goal like “learn landings” into a clear, observable task with a stated standard.
Intuition Check
Do not read objective here as just a general goal or lesson topic. In instructor training, a performance-based objective must say what action the student will perform, under what conditions, and to what standard.
Example Sentence 1
Each lesson in the syllabus opens with a performance-based objective so the student knows exactly what skill they must demonstrate by the end of the flight.
Example Sentence 2
Using performance-based objectives helped the CFI measure whether the student was ready for the stage check.
