Definition
Assessments in which a learner demonstrates mastery of a skill by actually performing it, rather than answering questions about it. The instructor observes the learner carrying out the task and judges proficiency against defined standards.
Plain English
A test where the student shows they can do the thing, not just talk about it. The instructor watches them do it and decides whether they have it down.
Context Anchor
In the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook, this term appears in assessment discussions about how instructors evaluate what a learner can actually do during training.
Derivation
From Latin 'per' (through) and 'forma' (form, shape), meaning to carry something through to completion. A performance test checks that the learner can carry the task through, start to finish, in the real form it takes in flying.
Why Pilots Care
They reveal whether a student can safely apply what they have learned in actual flight conditions, directly affecting training progress and certification readiness.
Intuition Check
Do not read performance tests as tests about aircraft performance numbers. In this instructor context, performance means the learner’s demonstrated ability to do a task.
Example Sentence 1
The instructor used a performance test to evaluate the student's short-field landing technique.
Example Sentence 2
Before recommending the student for the checkride, the instructor used several performance tests covering emergency procedures.
