Definition
Machined channels cut horizontally around the outside of a piston that hold the piston rings in place. Each groove seats one ring, allowing the ring to expand outward against the cylinder wall while remaining locked into the piston as it moves up and down.
Plain English
The slots cut into the side of the piston where the piston rings sit. The rings live in these slots and ride along the cylinder wall as the piston moves.
Context Anchor
Seen in aircraft engine maintenance, especially when inspecting pistons, replacing rings, or checking for wear during engine repair.
Derivation
Groove' comes from the Dutch 'groeve,' meaning a furrow or channel. In an engine, the piston ring grooves are the channels machined to carry the rings.
Why Pilots Care
Correct groove depth and condition are essential for ring sealing, compression, and preventing oil from entering the combustion chamber.
Analogy
Think of a ring sitting in a shallow track around a round part. If the track is damaged or too wide, the ring cannot sit correctly or do its job well.
Intuition Check
The grooves are not the piston rings themselves. They are the channels in the piston that the rings fit into.
Example Sentence 1
During the overhaul, the mechanic checked the piston ring grooves for wear before installing new rings.
Example Sentence 2
Carbon deposits in the piston ring grooves can cause the rings to stick and lose compression.
