Definition
A stage of flight training that occurs after a student pilot has completed their first solo flight but before they begin cross-country flight training. During this phase, the instructor refines the student's existing skills, introduces new maneuvers, and builds the proficiency, judgment, and decision-making the student will need to safely operate away from the home airport.
Plain English
The training period between a student's first solo and the start of training for flights to other airports. It's the bridge phase where the instructor sharpens what the student already knows and adds the skills needed before they can fly somewhere new on their own.
Context Anchor
Seen in instructor lesson planning and student pilot training syllabi after the first solo flight and before cross-country lessons begin.
Why Pilots Care
This phase ensures the student has solid local-area skills and confidence before advancing to cross-country operations where navigation and decision-making demands increase.
Intuition Check
Post-solo does not mean the student is finished with basic training or free to fly anywhere. It means the student has passed one major step and is now building skill before the next stage.
Example Sentence 1
During the post-solo prior to cross-country training phase, the instructor focused on improving the student's pilotage and dead reckoning skills.
Example Sentence 2
Once the student demonstrated consistent traffic pattern proficiency in the post-solo prior to cross-country training phase, the instructor introduced cross-country planning.
