Definition
In the context of human needs and motivation, primary refers to needs that are biological and essential for physical survival, such as food, water, air, sleep, and shelter. These needs must be satisfied before a person can focus attention on higher-level needs like learning, achievement, or self-improvement.
Plain English
Primary means 'first in importance' or 'must come before anything else.' A primary need is one the body has to take care of before the mind can focus on anything else.
Context Anchor
Seen in the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook when discussing student motivation, human needs, and what must be addressed before effective learning can take place.
Derivation
From the Latin 'primarius,' meaning 'of the first rank' or 'chief,' which comes from 'primus' (first). In aviation instruction, 'primary' keeps that sense of 'comes first' -- these are the needs that come before all others.
Why Pilots Care
An instructor who recognizes unmet primary needs can address them directly, preventing distraction and improving a student's ability to absorb training.
Intuition Check
Primary does not just mean “important.” Here it means the first, most basic, or most central thing that other things depend on.
Example Sentence 1
Before starting a long ground lesson, the instructor made sure the student had eaten and was rested, knowing that primary needs must be met first.
Example Sentence 2
When primary needs for security are threatened, even a capable student may lose focus during flight maneuvers.
