Definition
An electronic calculator that allows the user to enter and store a sequence of operating instructions (a program), which the calculator can then execute on demand to perform repeated or multi-step calculations automatically.
Plain English
A calculator you can teach to do a set of steps for you. Once the steps are loaded, you just enter the numbers and it runs the whole calculation by itself.
Context Anchor
Seen in flight planning, performance planning, and some written test or cockpit calculation discussions.
Derivation
Programmable comes from the Greek 'programma', meaning a written public notice or set of instructions. In this context, it means the calculator can hold and run a stored set of instructions, not just do one calculation at a time.
Why Pilots Care
Allows accurate, repeatable computations for weight and balance, fuel, or performance without constant manual entry.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “programmable” means the calculator makes decisions for the pilot. It only follows the math steps that were stored in it.
Example Sentence 1
The pilot used a programmable calculator to work out true airspeed and fuel burn during cruise.
Example Sentence 2
Before using apps, many pilots carried a programmable calculator for quick enroute fuel and time estimates.
