Definition
A runway threshold that has been temporarily or permanently moved from its original position further down the runway, typically due to construction, maintenance, or repairs to the original threshold area. The pavement behind a relocated threshold is closed and not available for any aircraft operation, including takeoff or rollout.
Plain English
The start of the usable runway has been moved further down the runway, and the pavement behind that new starting point is closed off and cannot be used at all.
Context Anchor
Seen in runway markings, airport notices, construction areas, and during taxi, takeoff, and landing planning.
Derivation
Relocated' comes from Latin re- (again) and locare (to place), meaning placed in a new spot. The threshold has literally been moved to a new location on the runway.
Why Pilots Care
Ensures pilots land at the correct point to have enough runway length and avoid obstacles or construction areas.
Intuition Check
Do not assume a relocated threshold is the same as a displaced threshold. With a relocated threshold, the pavement before the marking is closed to aircraft use; it is not just a landing restriction.
Example Sentence 1
Due to construction at the approach end, runway 27 has a relocated threshold, shortening the available runway by 1,500 feet.
Example Sentence 2
Runway 27 has a relocated threshold due to work on the approach end, shortening the landing distance by 500 feet.
