Definition
The official document, approved by the FAA and produced by the manufacturer, that contains the operating limitations, normal and emergency procedures, performance data, and systems information specific to a particular helicopter or other rotorcraft. It must be carried aboard the aircraft and is the authoritative source for how that rotorcraft is to be flown.
Plain English
The official handbook for a specific helicopter that tells the pilot how to fly it, what it can and cannot do, and exactly what to do when something goes wrong.
Context Anchor
Seen when checking approved procedures, limits, and emergency actions for a particular rotorcraft.
Derivation
Rotorcraft means an aircraft that gets its lift from rotating blades (a helicopter is the most common type). Flight manual is simply the book of how to fly it. So an RFM is the flight manual for a rotorcraft, written for that exact make and model.
Why Pilots Care
The RFM provides the only legally binding procedures and limitations for that aircraft; deviating from it can make the flight illegal or unsafe.
Intuition Check
Do not treat the RFM as a general textbook. It is the approved operating manual for a specific rotorcraft, and its limits and procedures apply to that aircraft.
Example Sentence 1
Before takeoff, the pilot reviewed the emergency procedures section of the RFM.
Example Sentence 2
The crew confirmed that the current weight and balance remained within the limits published in the RFM.
