Definition
An ATC advisory term indicating that the usable length of a runway has been temporarily reduced from its published full length, typically due to construction, maintenance, or an obstruction. When ATC issues this advisory, the controller specifies the shortened distance available for takeoff or landing, and the pilot must use only that reduced portion of the runway.
Plain English
Part of the runway is closed off right now, so pilots can only use a smaller section of it. ATC will tell you how much runway you actually have to work with.
Context Anchor
Pilots may hear this from air traffic control, see it in airport notices, or encounter it through runway markings, barriers, or construction areas at an airport.
Why Pilots Care
Takeoff and landing performance must be recalculated using the reduced length to avoid running out of runway.
Grounding Statement
Picture arriving at a familiar runway and finding that one end is blocked off for work; the runway is still there, but only part of it may be used.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “runway shortened” means the runway’s published length has permanently changed. In this context, it means the usable part of the runway is temporarily or specifically reduced.
Example Sentence 1
Tower advised, 'Runway 27 shortened, 4,800 feet available for takeoff,' so the pilot rechecked the takeoff distance before accepting the clearance.
Example Sentence 2
After the Runway Shortened call, the pilot used the new distance to confirm the aircraft could still depart safely.
