Definition
A takeoff and climb technique used when the available runway is short and/or obstacles lie in the departure path, requiring the airplane to lift off in the shortest possible distance and climb at the steepest possible angle to clear those obstacles. The procedure typically involves using the manufacturer's recommended flap setting, applying full power while holding the brakes (or from a rolling start as specified), rotating at the published short-field rotation speed, and climbing at VX (best angle-of-climb speed) until obstacles are cleared, then transitioning to VY (best rate-of-climb speed).
Plain English
A way of taking off that gets the airplane into the air in the shortest distance and climbing at the steepest angle, used when the runway is short or there are trees, wires, or buildings to clear just past the end of it.
Context Anchor
You encounter this during takeoff training, performance planning, and any departure from a short runway or a runway with trees, terrain, wires, or other obstacles near the departure end.
Derivation
"Short-field" simply names the condition the technique is built for — a runway that is short relative to the airplane's normal takeoff distance. "Maximum performance climb" means getting the most climb angle the airplane is capable of producing, not the most comfortable or routine climb.
Why Pilots Care
Allows safe departure from runways too short for a normal takeoff by reducing the distance needed to become airborne and providing maximum obstacle clearance immediately after liftoff.
Grounding Statement
The goal is to get airborne within the available runway and climb steeply enough to clear what is ahead without letting the airplane get too slow.
Intuition Check
“Maximum performance” does not mean forcing the airplane beyond its limits. It means using the approved configuration, power, and climb speed that produce the best safe obstacle-clearing climb for that airplane.
Example Sentence 1
Because the grass strip was only 1,800 feet long with tall pines off the departure end, the pilot briefed a short-field takeoff and maximum performance climb before taxiing into position.
Example Sentence 2
During the flight review the instructor had the student demonstrate a short-field takeoff and maximum performance climb from the 2,200-foot runway with a simulated 50-foot obstacle.
