Definition
A written sequence of steps the pilot follows to safely stop the engine and secure the airplane after taxiing to parking. It typically includes setting the parking brake, turning off avionics and electrical equipment, leaning the mixture or moving the fuel control to cutoff, switching the magnetos and master switch off, and removing the key. The exact items and order are specified in the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) or Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) for that aircraft.
Plain English
The list of things the pilot does, in order, to turn off the engine and shut the airplane down properly at the end of a flight.
Context Anchor
Used after landing, taxiing clear, and parking the airplane during the engine shutdown procedure.
Why Pilots Care
Following the correct order prevents engine damage, accidental restarts, and leaves the aircraft in a safe condition for the next pilot or ground crew.
Intuition Check
Do not think of shutdown as simply turning the engine off. In this context, the shutdown checklist is the complete ordered procedure for safely securing the airplane after flight.
Example Sentence 1
After taxiing to the ramp, the pilot set the parking brake and ran the shutdown checklist before opening the door.
Example Sentence 2
The instructor reminded the student to complete every item on the shutdown checklist before exiting the aircraft.
